Baal John was born in Claxton Bay, Trinidad to Sonny and Bhagwandai John. They relocated to La fortune, Woodland when he was six years old. He began singing at the age of 8, and needless to say there was no stopping this young performer. He had a heartfelt passion for Mohd. Rafi songs at the time. At around age 19 he was encouraged into Classical Singing by his neighbour Boochoon Jagmohan. In 1970 he placed 1st in the "B" Class category of the Island wide Classical Singing Competition hosted by the NCIC at the Naparima Bowl, sowing the seed for a wave of popularity. He had formal training in music at the Bharatiya Vidya Sansthan. The musical journey of Baal John met a new dimension when he married his beautiful and talented wife Lily way back in the early seventies. This sensational duo is the first successful husband - wife singing team making musical waves wherever they perform. Lily's aptitude and love for music manifested early in her life. She began singing bhajans and chowtal at a very early age, she is also well versed in folk songs, traditional wedding songs, she sings at chhathi's and barahi's as well. In 1975 Baal was a Grand Finalist at the popular Mastana Bahar. He together with his wife and singing partner Lily John has performed extensively locally and abroad including Guadeloupe, Martinique, Jamaica, Guyana, St. Vincent, USA and Canada. The power of music brought them together; this superbly talented couple continues to be involved in the promotion and development of East-Indian Culture.
