Susan Mohip (Baby Susan)

Born in Trinidad and Tobago, Susan Mohip started dancing at the tender age of three, having been inspired by her mother. With the immense support and guidance of her mother and family, she became Trinidad's leading creative and film dancer. BABY SUSAN as she was fondly called, became a name synonymous with dance in both Trinidad and the wider Caribbean. She was the winner of many local competitions in Trinidad, Mastana Bahar, Twelve and Under and Indian Cultural Pageant. Being fond of the Indian Classical Kathak Dance, she received her initial training from Shri Pradeep Shankar, before leaving Trinidad in 1989 to further her studies in India. She later received an I.C.C.R. scholarship from the government of India and completed her three year Diploma Degree at the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi. In 1994, she obtained her Post-Graduate Degree under Shrimati Vashwati Mishra. Susan has also studied the various folk dances of India and has completed a three year course in Hindustani Classical Vocal at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, India. She has toured extensively in India, Canada, New York, Suriname and Guyana and participated in many group compositions choreographed both by her guru and Pt. Birju Maharaj. On her return to Trinidad she continues to carve a successful and fulfilling career as a Classical Kathak Dancer. Since her return she has performed for many local and visiting International dignitaries such as the Prime Minister of India, H.R.H. Prince of Wales, the President of Botswana and many others. Dance Choreographer for Carifesta 2003 in Suriname. At present Susan is a co-founder and director of Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, as well as the teacher and choreographer of its Dance Theatres. She is also a part-time instructor of dance at the Academy for the performing arts, University of Trinidad and Tobago. With her work at S.M.V. and as an individual artiste, Susan firmly re-established herself not only as one of Trinidad's leading dance pioneers but with her unique vision, innovative ideas and passion for dance, she continues to make invaluable contributions to Indian Dance and Culture.
